Hitting the pavement to ask, “What hot sound are you listening too?”

Nina Kim/18/club hopper
: “Tu-Pac all the way, his music is both inspiring and uplifting. I think that people who like Notorious B.I.G and Nas will dig his new album."

Stephanie/31/horse lover
: “Travis was a steal for only nine bucks at Target. They don’t sound like anyone else on the radio- their sound is very fresh and original!”

Richard/22/student : “ Phantom Planet is a great band. I saw them open for Incubus on the Civic tour. Their sound is mainly west coast stuff, you have probably heard of them already. Their single “California” is the theme song for The O.C, the show on Fox. ”

The Thrills
So much for the City

Picture the perfect beach outing and you get The Thrills at their finest. Its probably difficult to get through a whole listening before someone says, “they sound like the Beach Boys”. To sound remotely in the realm of The Beach Boys is a huge feat. Every track is laced with summers pass; pictures of small bikinis, building sand castles, and meeting that someone special on the boardwalk breezes into your mind right when the record starts spinning. So much for the City , if you haven’t guessed already, adopts a fun-in-the-sun vibe, complete with a stroll down pop lane. Yes, The Thrills have a contemporary take on the Golden State sound but at times the slower tracks (Hollywoods Kids and ‘Til the Tide Creeps In) resembles a wave devouring the perfect sand castle that took you hours to resurrect.

Death Cab for Cutie
Transatlantic

Death Cab for Cutie delivers a solid record. With singer/songwriter Ben Gibbard’s introspective lyrics orchestrated around haunting rhythmic guitar and hypnotic finales its gives you the urge to plunge your lighter into the open air and sway with the masses. Gibbard’s verses are on the verge of heartbreak poetry; his voice rises to all the occasions and at other times falls to tender sensitive lows.

Closer: The lyrics will get under your skin.

Download (legally): “The New Year” or “Tiny Vessel”

Sounds like: Postal Service

Top picks for the hottest videos, DVD, singles and so forth.

1. No Doubt’s single “Its my Life” is a sugar blast of high power and energy.

2. Andre 3000 from OUTKAST music video for “Hey Ya” is wickedly fun- its shows a dozen or so Andre 3000 invading the Ed Sullivan show.

3. Coldplay Live in 2003 DVD was recorded in Sydney’s Horden Pavilion. Their sound on DVD (if you have surround sound or awesome speaker system) is tighter, richer, and more appropriately louder.

4. Check out these bands: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Pretty Girls Makes Graves, or Belle and Sebastian. Their music might just blow you away.
